chapter one response writing.

I believe that the social functions of the acquisition of titles, and the expensive ceremonies in this culture serve to build more respect for the honored individual within his community.  Because the one being honored must spend most of his hard-earned money, the community can see his pride and sincerity in his actions.  Hence forth, the others will respect his generosity and responsibility, making him a more respected figure in society.  These ceremonies also seem to be ways to learn more about a person.  The other people will learn what the one being titled has done to earn that title, and maybe who all the members of his family are, allowing them to be better than strangers with that family.  These things all lend a hand in making the community stronger by giving respect to the titled men, so that if the need arises he will not be ashamed to fight for his neighbors.
